Using Google Docs in your Virtual Classroom

Add a Doc from Google Drive to your Content Library, so that you can edit the file live in class.

What are Google Docs?

Google Docs in an online word processor, like Microsoft Word.

If you don't have one already, you can set up a free google account here.

Google docs can be really useful for online teaching because they are stored in the cloud, and you can live-edit them collaboratively, meaning that multiple people can edit the document at once, and in real time.

It is possible to open a Google Doc in LearnCube's Virtual Classroom. This means your student can complete a writing exercise, such as an essay, and you can then correct it with them in class. You will not need to open a new window, and you will still be able to see and hear your student.

Setting up the Google Doc

When you have created a Google Doc, you will need to make sure the sharing permissions are set to public.

To do this:

  • Click on the "Share" button in the top right corner

  • In the "General Access" section, choose "Anyone with the link"

  • If you want your students to be able to edit the document as well as view it, change the role to "Editor"

  • Finally, click on "Copy link" to save the document link to your clipboard

Uploading the Google Doc to your Content Library

  • Navigate to the file upload menu
    • From the Library Admin section, click on the "Upload File" icon.

    • From inside the Virtual Classroom, click on the Lesson Materials button

    Then click on the "Upload Lesson Materials" icon on the bottom right of the Lesson Materials menu.

  • Click on the Google Drive icon on the right hand side.

  • Paste the link that you copied from your Google Doc and click the upload button.

  • Now you can give your document a name, and enter subject, language, and level properties.

  • To finish the process, click on the "Upload File" button beside your file once more.

Open the Google Doc in your Virtual Classroom

If you have already uploaded the Google Doc, you can open it from your Lesson Materials menu, just like any other file.

I you have just uploaded it, click on the green icon beside the file to add it to your classroom right away.
